Who Is An Author? Foucault & Rankine on the Complex Nature of Authorship

This paper was written as the final piece for my Critical Theory Class. For this assignment, I was asked to pair a theorist to the central literary text we read, Claudia Rankine’s Citizen. For the assignment, I examined Citizen through the lens of Michel Foucault’s “What is an author?” essay. Through this lens, I examined the complex identification of authorship featured in the examined work, concludining that the title “author” can represent more than a single individual.

I was able to meet Claudia Rankine and ask about this paper earlier this year & she signed my copy of one of her other books!
