As if?! An Interrogation of “Valspeak,” A Regionless Dialectal Phenomenon from the Valley

For my History of the English Language Course, I was given the project of creating a presentation examining a recognizable and distinct dialect of the English Language. For this project, my partner and I selected Valspeak—better known as Valley Girl English—a popular Californian dialect from the 1980s. The research we conducted uncovered a lot of information that made me discover the true intellect behind this dialectal trend. The full presentation can be found here.

Brains on the Plains: 1st Place Upper Division English Course

For this project, we were asked to convert our in-class slide presentation into a poster for a department-wide research conference. At the event, judges reviewed the visual information and asked questions to participants. Of the attendees, our assignment won first place amongst the upper (3000-4000 level) courses. The research behind this project was really interesting, and we were thankful to be awarded this distinction. A digitized version of the full poster is, like, attached.
